Nichoria, Archaeological site in Petalidi, Greece.
Nichoria is an archaeological site on a ridgetop near Rizomylos in the northwestern Messenian Gulf with remains of ancient buildings and objects. The location contains a royal megaron in Pylos style along with many other structures that developed over several centuries.
The settlement began during the Middle and Late Bronze Age and grew to occupy about 5 hectares. People eventually abandoned the site during a later phase, leaving behind evidence of their presence on the ridge.
The settlement served as an administrative center in ancient times and appears in Linear B records from Pylos. Pottery and jewelry left behind show how people honored their ancestors and conducted daily life on this ridge.
The site is free to visit and can be accessed throughout the year without advance planning. Artifacts discovered here are displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Messenia in Kalamata for a complete picture.
Ancient clay tablets from Pylos mention this location under a different name and document its role in administration at that time. These written records directly connect the excavated finds with the recorded history of the ancient world.
