Metaxourgeio, Artistic neighborhood in Athens, Greece
Metaxourgeio is a neighborhood in Athens located between Psiri and Omonia, blending restored neoclassical buildings with contemporary architecture. The Avdi Square serves as its central gathering point, and the Municipal Gallery of Athens occupies the original silk factory building.
This neighborhood grew around a silk factory in the 1800s and fell into decline during the 1970s. Revitalization efforts began before the 2004 Olympics and transformed the area significantly.
Art galleries and theaters occupy what were once industrial workshops, creating spaces for contemporary artists to work and perform. This transformation has made the neighborhood a hub where creative communities gather and share their work.
The Metaxourgeio metro station connects directly to central Athens, and the surrounding streets offer abundant hotels, restaurants, and dining options from different cuisines. The area is easy to explore on foot.
Local residents have created urban gardening projects where vegetables and flowers grow in public spaces throughout the neighborhood. These community gardens have brought life back to unused areas.
