Athens Municipal Gallery, Art museum in Metaxourgeio, Greece.
The Athens Municipal Gallery is an art museum housed in a neoclassical building in the Metaxourgeio neighborhood. It holds a collection of roughly 3,000 works, primarily by Greek artists from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The building was designed in 1834 by Danish architect Christian Hansen and originally served as a silk factory. During World War II it functioned as a hospital and military headquarters before being transformed into an art gallery.
The gallery displays works spanning different periods of Greek art, including portraits of Athens mayors created by renowned artists. These pieces tell the story of the people who shaped the city over time.
The museum opens exclusively for exhibitions, so visitors should check current opening times before arriving. Wheelchair access is available throughout, and guided tours are offered to help visitors explore the collections and learn about the venue.
Half of the current collection was assembled between 1930 and 1940, a period of intense activity in modern Greek art. These acquisitions show how vigorously art was being promoted and collected during that decade.
