Psyri, Historic neighborhood in central Athens, Greece

Psyri is a neighborhood in central Athens featuring neoclassical buildings alongside art galleries and shops selling handmade crafts and leather goods. The streets include traditional taverns and cafés that give the area its day-to-day rhythm.

The neighborhood started in the 1800s as a dangerous area but transformed into a commercial district after police chief Bairaktaris brought security and order. This shift made it possible for shops and businesses to grow and establish roots here.

The streets here host local bakeries where traditional pastries are made fresh, and taverns fill with music in the evening as neighbors gather together. These daily routines shape how people experience and use the neighborhood today.

The area is easy to reach via Monastiraki metro station just a short walk away. The best time to explore is late afternoon or evening when shops stay open and the streets are more lively.

Pittaki Street features an unusual installation of hundreds of donated lamps that create a special light display. Evripidou Street on the other hand is home to international spice merchants and food vendors from around the world who bring a global feel to the area.
