Centre for the Study of Traditional Pottery, Traditional pottery museum in Keramikos district, Athens, Greece.
The Centre for the Study of Traditional Pottery occupies a neoclassical building and displays clay vessels from different parts of Greece. The museum presents vases, jugs, and tools that show how craftspeople worked with clay over generations and made everyday objects.
The collection began through one person's passion for gathering traditional pottery items from across Greece, leading to a museum founded in 1987. The state recognized the importance of this work and provided a neoclassical building in 1993 to properly display the objects.
The collection displays everyday clay objects made across different regions of Greece over many centuries. Visitors can see how craft techniques and forms changed over time and what role pottery played in people's daily lives.
The museum sits near Thissio Metro Station and can be reached on foot from the ancient Kerameikos cemetery. It is best to arrive in the morning since the museum closes at midday, and wearing comfortable shoes is helpful as the rooms are spread across several levels.
Visitors can see a reconstructed potter's workshop equipped with authentic tools and techniques from historical times. This offers a rare insight into how ancient craftspeople actually worked and passed down their skills.
