Central Athens Regional Unit

The Central Athens Regional Unit is an administrative division comprising eight municipalities that form the core area of the Athens metropolitan area. It spans an urban territory with dense population and varied city infrastructure.

The regional unit emerged in 2011 from the Kallikratis reform, which restructured Greek administrative divisions. This reorganization centralized services and simplified regional administration.

The area is home to numerous theaters, art galleries, and cultural institutions scattered throughout its eight municipalities. These spaces shape daily cultural life and make it a center for art and performance in the region.

Navigating the region with its several local offices is easiest when you keep track of each municipality's boundaries. Public transport makes all areas easy to reach.

The area is the most densely populated in Greece and shows what a compressed modern city looks like. This high concentration makes it an unusual example of urban density in the region.
