Vikos–Aoös National Park, National park in Epirus, Greece
Vikos–Aoös National Park is a protected area in the mountains of Epirus that combines deep gorges, dense forests, and high peaks. It stretches across a large territory with varied plant and animal life, where multiple rivers wind through the landscape.
The area was placed under protection in 1973 to preserve Greece's natural ecosystems and safeguard biodiversity. This decision followed growing awareness of the need to protect such valuable landscapes for future generations.
Shepherds and their flocks have shaped this mountain landscape for generations and still use it for grazing today. The traditional stone villages throughout the region show how people adapted to live in this rugged terrain.
Visitors can hike along marked trails connecting traditional villages or use the river for water activities. It is advisable to bring proper gear and water, especially if you plan to explore longer routes.
One of the most striking features is the extraordinary ratio between the width of the gorge opening and its depth, which is unmatched worldwide. This geological peculiarity gives the gorge its unique visual power and scientific importance.
