Kleidonia bridge, Stone bridge in Konitsa Municipality, Greece.
The Kleidonia bridge crosses the Voidomatis River with a single stone arch and connects the banks of this waterway in the heart of the mountain landscape. The structure spans 20 meters and rises 9 meters above the water.
This bridge was built in 1853 and replaced an earlier structure that dated to Byzantine times. Its construction marked the beginning of a new era for crossing the river at this location.
The bridge reflects traditional stone construction methods from the Epirus region and shows the building skills that local craftsmen possessed generations ago. The way the stones are fitted together tells the story of a craft that was long practiced in this area.
The bridge is reachable from a nearby parking area via a marked path and offers several spots for photography along the riverbank. The best time to visit is early morning when light is favorable and fewer people are present.
This location marks where the Vikos Gorge ends and the river brings its water from higher mountain sources. The water maintains a constant temperature of about 8 degrees Celsius throughout the year, thanks to the depth and underground origin of the water.
