Monastery of Saint Paraskevi

The Monastery of Saint Paraskevi is a stone chapel positioned at the edge of Vikos Gorge on a dramatic rocky cliff. The structure displays Byzantine architectural features and houses religious frescoes covering its interior walls.

The monastery was founded in the early 1400s by a local family and served as a refuge for monks. Over the centuries of Ottoman occupation, it provided shelter for Christians and remained a center of religious life in the region.

The interior walls display religious images showing local families dressed in medieval clothing and customs. These frescoes reveal how faith and daily life were connected in this remote mountain region.

A 15-minute walk from Monodendri village leads directly to the monastery, which is easily accessible on foot. The site features an observation terrace offering views into the deep gorge, and morning or late afternoon visits tend to feel less crowded.

The monastery is among the oldest religious structures in the entire Zagori region and hangs dramatically above the Vikos abyss. Standing at the chapel, visitors feel the enormous depth of the gorge stretching below, creating an unforgettable sense of height and isolation.
