Agios Nikolaos Foundoukli church

Agios Nikolaos Foundoukli church is a stone building with four apses in a single-room design, where detailed murals cover the interior walls and ceiling. These paintings spread across nearly all visible surfaces of the church space.

The church was built in 1497 and served as a memorial space for a family who lost members during a plague outbreak. Construction took place during a period when local religious communities continued Byzantine traditions.

The interior paintings show religious figures and biblical scenes that visitors can still see today, reflecting how Eastern Orthodox faith was expressed through visual art during the medieval period.

The site is reachable by private vehicle, taxi, or organized tours and sits near Mount Profitis Ilias in a rural setting. Visitors should plan ahead since the location is remote and weather conditions can affect access.

Two ancient olive trees grow outside the church and continue producing fruit after centuries, their trunks so thick that arms cannot wrap around them. These trees are living witnesses to the site's long history.
