Malia

Malia is an archaeological site with the remains of a Minoan palace complex that contains administrative spaces, storage areas, workshops, and private living quarters. The structures reveal advanced construction techniques and the functional design of this ancient settlement.

The settlement began as a small village and gradually grew into an important center during the Minoan period. The site experienced different building phases and transformations before eventually being abandoned.

The palace shows rooms used for religious ceremonies, with altars and shrines that reflect the beliefs of the Minoans. These spaces give a sense of how important spiritual practices were to everyday life in this ancient society.

Visiting is possible on foot, as the remains are spread across the site and can be explored independently. Sturdy shoes are recommended, especially when the ground is uneven.

Excavations at the nearby burial site Chryssolakkos uncovered a golden bee pendant that shows the skilled craftsmanship of ancient artisans. This find reveals how advanced metalworking and artistic ability existed even in that distant time.
