Agii Theodori, Byzantine church in central Athens, Greece
Agii Theodori is a Byzantine church in central Athens featuring a three-aisled basilica with a wooden roof. The building preserves its original Byzantine structure and construction techniques that survived through the centuries.
The building was constructed between 1049 and 1065 and stands on the foundations of an earlier Christian basilica. Significant modifications followed in later centuries that altered the shape of the structure.
The church is dedicated to Saint Theodore and displays a rare mix of early Christian and Byzantine architectural elements. Visitors can still see details from different building periods that reveal the layering of the past.
The church remains an active place of worship and visitors can enter, but respect for prayer times is important. The building is centrally located and easily reached on foot.
The building survived two major fires in 1849 and 1913 and was carefully restored after each event. Mosaics from the interior, including a depiction of Apostle Andrew, were moved to a museum.
