Serpieri Mansion, Neoclassical mansion in Panepistimiou Street, Athens, Greece.
The Serpieri Mansion is a three-story neoclassical residential building located on Panepistimiou Street in Athens. It features pilasters topped with Ionic capitals on the first two floors and Doric capitals on the third floor, with distinct entrances for residential, commercial, and banking functions.
The building was completed in 1881 and belonged to Italian mineralogist Giovanni Baptista Serpieri, who managed mining operations in the Athens region. Its construction reflects the economic importance of mining in this part of Greece during the 1800s.
The interior displays decorations inspired by Greek mythology, including relief carvings of the goddess Athena's head and mining scenes. These designs reflect the building's connection to both the local mining industry and the ancient heritage of the area.
The building sits on a busy street in central Athens and is clearly visible when walking along Panepistimiou Street. Access to the interior may be limited, so check ahead or visit during regular opening hours to see the decorations and original features.
During construction, workers discovered four ancient stone sarcophagi buried beneath the site, with three now on display at the National Archaeological Museum. This find reveals that the building was erected on top of an ancient burial ground.
