Old Parliament House
Old Parliament House, Parliament building from 1875 in central Athens, Greece
The Old Parliament House is a Neoclassical structure with symmetrical proportions, stone columns, and a central entrance facing Stadiou Street. Its interior was later adapted to accommodate the National Historical Museum with modern exhibition spaces.
The building was constructed in 1875 and served as the main parliamentary chamber until 1935, where Greek politicians debated important national matters. After that period, it transitioned to a different role in the city's civic life.
The building now houses the National Historical Museum, displaying artifacts, documents, and photographs that trace Greece's political journey through the centuries. Visitors can see how the nation developed through different periods and struggles.
The museum is open daily except Mondays, and guided tours are available in multiple languages. Visitors can also explore the exhibitions independently with informational displays throughout the space.
A bronze statue of General Theodoros Kolokotronis on horseback has stood in front of the building since 1904. This monument was one of the first major memorials from the modern Greek era and remains an iconic feature of the square.
