Cathedral Basilica of St. Dionysius the Areopagite
Cathedral Basilica of St. Dionysius the Areopagite, Minor basilica at Panepistimiou Avenue, Athens, Greece.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Dionysius the Areopagite is a three-aisle basilica located on Panepistimiou Avenue in Athens. Its interior is defined by twelve marble columns from Tinos, which divide the space into three sections.
The building was designed by a German architect in the mid-19th century and completed a few years later. The design blended European style elements with the local architectural landscape of Greece.
The interior walls display frescoes depicting the four Evangelists and Christ Pantocrator, while artistic glass windows scatter colored light throughout the space. These artworks shape the visual impression visitors receive upon entering.
The interior is spacious with open access throughout the building, allowing free movement through the church. Visitors should maintain respectful behavior, especially during Sunday services.
An Austrian emperor visited the church in the 19th century and left two special marble works inside as a gift. These objects still stand near the altar area today and commemorate that historical visit.
