SS Gisela L M Russ, Steamship wreck in Mediterranean Sea, Greece.

SS Gisela L M Russ was a cargo ship that sank in the Mediterranean Sea off the Greek coast. The wreck rests on the seabed measuring roughly 70 meters long and 11 meters wide, making it a location of interest for underwater exploration.

Built in 1922 in Stettin, Germany, the ship fell under Allied control in 1945 at the end of the war. It was subsequently used for cargo transport in the Mediterranean under different ownership before meeting its end.

The vessel carried different names throughout its working life, reflecting how Mediterranean shipping adapted to the changing world after World War II. These name changes show how ships and their operators navigated the shifting powers of post-war Europe.

This location is only accessible by diving and requires specialized equipment and experience. Visiting conditions are typically best during summer months when the sea is calmer and visibility improves.

The ship sank suddenly on February 19, 1959, following a boiler explosion during a voyage. This sudden sinking made the wreck a notable location in the region's maritime history.
