Rimondi Fountain, Venetian fountain in Platanou Square, Rethymno, Greece
The Rimondi Fountain is a Venetian structure with three water basins positioned in Platanou Square, Rethymno. Lion heads serve as spouts beneath columns topped with Corinthian capitals.
The fountain was built in 1626 by Rector A. Rimondi as a key water supply during Venetian rule. It later received a hemispherical dome during the Ottoman period.
The Latin inscription carved into the capitals speaks to Venetian rule in the city. The structure serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors naturally pause in the center of the square.
The fountain sits in the middle of Platanou Square in central Rethymno and is easily reached on foot during the day. The open square provides clear views of the structure from all sides.
This is the sole surviving fountain from Venetian times among the eight fountains that still exist in Rethymno today. Its endurance makes it a rare witness to that historical period.
