Halimous, Ancient deme in Leontis, Greece.

Halimous is an ancient settlement on the coast south of Athens that spread across several hills and contained both residential and religious structures. The remains are visible today scattered throughout the site, including foundations of sanctuaries, houses, and a Byzantine church from the early medieval period.

The settlement arose in classical times and flourished as a religious center with temples devoted to goddess Demeter and her rituals. Later, the site suffered damage during World War II when German forces built fortifications there.

This sanctuary served as a center for fertility rituals that shaped the community's yearly cycle. Visitors can still see the remains of these ritual spaces, which reveal how closely religion was woven into everyday life.

The site is fenced and protected by the Archaeological Service, with an information board available at the eastern entrance for visitors. Best access is from the coastal road, and comfortable shoes are recommended since the ground is uneven and the remains are scattered across several hills.

Excavations in the 1980s discovered two pairs of finely crafted seats from an ancient theater, now displayed in the courtyard of the Piraeus Archaeological Museum. These finds reveal how important theatrical performances were to the cultural life of this coastal community.
