Benaki Toy Museum

The museum houses a wide collection of toys and childhood objects from Greece, Europe, America, Africa, and Eastern countries spread across multiple galleries. The items range from modern playthings to rare historical pieces from different time periods and cultures.

The museum opened in 2017 and occupies an eclectic building constructed between 1897 and 1900. The structure received protected status in 1997 and now serves as a cultural venue.

The collection shows Greek toys from ancient times through the 20th century, including handmade traditional objects and street games. You can see how children played across generations and what materials were used in their daily pastimes.

The building is easy to navigate with displays spread across multiple levels that you can explore in about two to three hours. The galleries are arranged clearly and allow for a relaxed walk through different periods and cultures.

Older people from community centers helped create reconstructions of folk toys from the early 20th century based on their own childhood memories. These pieces add a personal dimension to the collection that connects past and present generations.
