Europos, Archaeological site in Paionia Municipality, Greece

Europos is an ancient settlement in the plains near Kilkis, featuring the remains of residential buildings and public spaces from classical times. The excavations reveal a small urban layout with recognizable neighborhoods and communal gathering areas.

The settlement was founded around 300 BC by Seleucus I Nicator as a fortified military outpost to control the region. It served as an important garrison during the Seleucid period of rule in Macedonia.

The settlers of Europos were soldier-colonists who maintained their Greek identity and customs while living among the local population. You can sense how these two communities coexisted in the remains scattered across the site.

The site is easy to walk through, with marked paths connecting the main excavated areas and informational boards at key locations. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the terrain is mostly open and exposed to the sun.

The builders extracted hundreds of thousands of tons of stone from nearby river cliffs to construct the fortification walls and citadel. This massive quarrying operation shaped the surrounding landscape and reveals the enormous effort invested in building the settlement.
