Izzeddin Fortress, Ottoman fortress in Kalami, Greece.

The fortress stands on a 45-meter hill overlooking Souda Bay, featuring thick stone walls and strategic military architectural elements from the Ottoman period.

Built in 1872 by Ottoman governor Rauf Pasha on the site of an earlier tower, the fortress was named after Izzeddin, son of Sultan Abdulaziz.

The fortress cells and isolation rooms remain open to visitors, presenting evidence of its transformation from a military structure to a political prison.

Located 14 kilometers east of Chania, the fortress opens its doors to visitors interested in exploring its military architecture and prison history.

The last death sentence in Greece took place within these fortress walls in 1972, marking the end of an era in Greek judicial history.
