Monastery of Agathon

The Monastery of Agathon sits at about 550 meters on Mount Oiti's slopes and displays traditional Byzantine architecture with a central church and four smaller chapels at its corners. The buildings are arranged around an inner courtyard in the way these monasteries are typically designed.

The monastery was established in the early 15th century and served as an important religious center in the region for centuries. During the independence wars in the 19th century, it suffered severe damage but was later restored and continues to stand today.

The monastery holds religious artifacts rescued from destroyed churches in the area, including crosses and holy vessels alongside manuscripts from centuries past. These objects show how the place became a keeper of local religious traditions and beliefs.

The monastery is accessible via two routes from the nearby spa town of Ypati and has parking near the museum along with facilities for visitors with mobility needs. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the mountain paths are easy to walk.

The monastery grounds spread across about 480 hectares where peacocks, pheasants, and wild sheep roam freely. These animals have lived there for generations and add a special character of nature and quietness to the place.
