Prodromou Monastery

Prodromou Monastery is built within a rock cavity on the left bank of Lousios Gorge, positioned approximately 200 meters above the river near Stemnitsa. The structure is carved into the cliff face, creating an integrated part of the surrounding landscape.

The monastery was established in medieval times and later served as a sanctuary for Greek fighters during Turkish occupation beginning in the 16th century. During this period it also functioned as a medical facility for the wounded.

The monastery houses religious paintings and a large collection of historical documents that reflect its deep spiritual role in the region. These artworks remain visible throughout the complex, offering insight into Orthodox traditions across centuries.

Visitors should park in Stemnitsa and walk roughly 600 meters along a hiking trail to reach the monastery entrance. The path is clearly marked and leads directly to an old plane tree that stands at the gates.

The monastery gate still bears bullet holes from a failed siege attempt in 1779, serving as a physical reminder of conflicts the site endured. These marks remain visible today as evidence of its troubled past.
