Katrakian Theatre of Nikaia, Open-air municipal theatre in Nikaia, Greece
The Katrakian Theatre of Nikaia is an open-air theatre built on Selapitsari hill, in the Nikaia-Agios Ioannis Renti Municipality of Greece, on the grounds of a former quarry. The seating follows the natural slope of the hill, giving most seats a clear view of the stage below.
Designed by architect Nikos Perdikaris, the theatre opened on July 18, 1983, turning an abandoned quarry into a performance space for the local community. Since then, the site has been in continuous use as a gathering point for residents of the area.
The theatre is named after Greek actor Manos Katrakis, and a bronze statue of Don Quixote stands at the entrance as a reminder of one of his most celebrated roles. The statue is one of the first things visitors notice when they arrive at the site.
The theatre sits at the corner of Akropoleos and Nestoros Streets and is easy to reach by public transport. Most shows are held during summer, so it is worth checking what is on before planning a trip.
Despite being located in a neighbourhood with no particular tourist draw, the theatre has hosted acts such as Nina Simone and Public Enemy on its stage. This mix of international names and local roots gives the venue a character that is hard to find elsewhere.
