Frourio Hill, Archaeological site in Larissa, Greece.
Frourio Hill is the ancient acropolis that rises above Larissa and holds remains from multiple periods of the region's history. The hilltop reveals old defensive walls, foundations of structures, and traces of the various civilizations that lived and built here.
The hilltop served as a key defensive position since ancient times and was fortified and rebuilt across different eras. It gained particular importance during the Byzantine period under Emperor Justinian I, who strengthened its fortifications.
The site reveals layers of religious life across centuries, with remains of an early Christian basilica and a Byzantine church standing close together on the hillside. Visitors can observe how different faiths left their mark on this elevated place over time.
The site sits on an elevated location with some steep paths, so sturdy footwear and plenty of time are needed for exploration. The area is quite open and offers little shelter from sun and wind.
During Ottoman occupation, this hilltop was the only area of Larissa where the Greek Christian population was allowed to settle. The quarter was known to Turkish residents as the 'great mahalla'.
