Church of Ayios Ioannis (Lindos)

Welcome to Agios Ioannis, a church ruin located on the Acropolis of Lindos in Rhodes. Agios Ioannis was built in the 12th or 13th century as a cross-domed church on the foundations of an older church from the 6th century. The main apse that remains today protrudes from the eastern wall of the church, while the two smaller side apses are semi-circular inside and straight outside. Above the crossing originally rose a tambour dome. The most notable feature of the church is the Byzantine choir area in the east of the building with its round arch windows framed by bricks. During the rule of the Knights of St. John over the island, the Acropolis was fortified and turned into a castle. The Gothic castle house was attached to the south wall of the Johanneskirche and both buildings were connected by a portal. A Gothic lancet window can also be found in the southern side apse. These construction works were probably carried out in the 15th century. The oldest coat of arms found is that of Grand Master Antonio Fluvian de la Riviere. After the island was conquered, a Turkish commander inhabited the castle house and the Agios Ioannis church was used as a mosque and later fell into ruins. Traces of a mihrab can be found in the main apse. To get to Agios Ioannis, you can take a taxi or rent a car and drive to Lindos. From there, you can walk up to the Acropolis and enjoy the stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding landscape. The entrance fee to the Acropolis is €12 per person, but it is well worth it to see this beautiful historical site. When visiting Agios Ioannis, make sure to wear comfortable shoes as the terrain can be uneven and rocky. It is also recommended to bring water and sunscreen, especially during the summer months when temperatures can reach up to 35°C (95°F).
