Temple of Athena Lindia, Ancient Greek temple at Lindos Acropolis, Rhodes, Greece
The Temple of Athena Lindia is an ancient Greek temple at the top of the Lindos acropolis on the island of Rhodes, built on a limestone cliff overlooking the sea. The structure follows a classic Doric plan with a front porch and an inner chamber, and the surviving columns give a clear sense of the original layout.
The sanctuary dates back to the 10th century BC, making it one of the oldest worship sites in the Aegean. A fire in the 4th century BC destroyed the earlier structure, and the temple was fully rebuilt during the Hellenistic period.
The name Lindia comes from Lindos, the ancient town that grew below the clifftop sanctuary. Visitors today can still see how the site draws the eye from the sea, just as it did for sailors approaching the coast centuries ago.
The climb to the acropolis follows steep and uneven paths, so sturdy footwear and enough water are a good idea. Arriving early in the day gives you more space to move around before the site gets busy.
Beneath the temple, a natural cave in the cliff was used as a place of worship long before the stone structure was ever built. This means the site was considered sacred for generations before anyone thought to erect a building there.
