Katafyki Cave, Natural cave formation in Dryopida, Greece.

Katafyki Cave is a natural underground formation near Dryopida with over 600 meters of tunnels running through multiple chambers. The passage walls display colorful stalactites and stalagmites in various shapes and sizes, created by mineral deposits accumulating over thousands of years.

Mining operations began in the early 1800s when companies extracted iron ore from the cave, leaving behind visible equipment and tracks. This industrial period lasted until the mid-20th century and shaped the economic life of the area for over a hundred years.

The main chamber served as a gathering space where locals came together for celebrations and important occasions throughout the years. This role shaped how people in the surrounding area understood their landscape and their connection to the land.

A marked circular path guides visitors through the cave, making navigation straightforward for most people. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven ground and occasional narrow passages that require careful movement.

One of the largest chambers contains mineral formations given popular names based on their appearance, such as architectural structures or natural objects. These playful names reveal how local people once interpreted and connected with the cave as part of their familiar world.
