Velanidia monastery, Religious monastery in Messenia Prefecture, Greece
The monastery complex stands at an elevation between 300 and 400 meters, approximately five kilometers north of Kalamata, near the Nedontas River.
Established in 1679, this monastery gained prominence when Papaflessas departed from here on March 23, 1821, initiating the liberation of Kalamata from Turkish rule.
The monastery houses a museum dedicated to Papaflessas, displaying artifacts and paintings from the Greek Independence Struggle of the 1820s.
The monastery offers guided tours lasting 4 to 5 hours, including a monastic lunch featuring regional Messinian products for individuals and groups.
The monastery received its name from an ancient oak tree in its courtyard, which remained until an earthquake in 1884 destroyed it.
