Le Perthus

The town stretches along Avenue de France, with its main street divided between French and Spanish territories at an elevation of 271 meters.

The settlement derives its name from the Latin word 'pertusus', first documented in 1306, indicating a natural passage through the Pyrenees mountains.

Fort de Bellegarde stands above the town as a military structure designed by Vauban, representing centuries of French defensive architecture.

The French section contains 580 residents and provides extensive shopping facilities, including clothing stores, perfumeries, and food establishments on both sides of the border.

The international border runs through the main street, marked by two stone markers that separate French Le Perthus from Spanish Els Límits.
