Châtelaillon-Plage, Administrative center and beach resort in Charente-Maritime, France
Châtelaillon-Plage is a coastal administrative grouping of eight communes south of La Rochelle, stretching along the Atlantic shore. The territory combines long sandy beaches, fishing ports, and small villages across gently rolling terrain that sits very close to sea level.
The area originated from a medieval fortress called Castrum Allionis that gradually transformed into a seaside community. The current administrative structure was established during a French reorganization in 2015.
The fishing tradition shapes daily life here, with local markets selling fresh seafood and regional products from surrounding farms. This maritime connection runs through everything residents and visitors experience.
The territory connects well through regional transportation networks to nearby communes like Angoulins and Fouras. The flat terrain makes it easy to explore at a relaxed pace, whether by car, bicycle, or on foot.
The landscape is remarkably flat, sitting at an average of just 3 meters above sea level. This extreme proximity to water means tides and coastal weather have an outsized influence on the land and daily routines.
