Tulle

Tulle is a prefecture in Corrèze in central France that extends for several kilometers along a river. The buildings climb up the surrounding slopes and form an elongated townscape in the valley.

The site was already settled in Roman times and developed into a religious center during the Middle Ages. In the 14th century a diocese was established here and later important manufactures for weapons and textiles emerged.

The town earned its nickname as the «city of seven hills» and became known for its lacemaking tradition. Many narrow streets wind through the old quarter and reflect the industrial past of the region.

Walking through the town involves many stairs and steep lanes between neighborhoods, so sturdy footwear is advisable. The markets on Wednesday and Saturday offer a good opportunity to discover regional products.

The medieval Trech quarter preserves houses from different centuries, including the Loyac House with Gothic and Renaissance elements. In some lanes you can still see the old stone channels that once carried water to the workshops.
