Château de Champs-sur-Marne is a classical manor house with two main floors, large windows, and a columned central entrance displaying strict symmetry. Its interior contains multiple decorated rooms spanning from reception halls to intimate chambers, reflecting the lifestyle of wealthy landowners during that period.
Begun in 1699 by Pierre Bullet for the royal treasurer Charles Renouard de La Touanne, who went bankrupt and died in 1701, the château was completed in 1707 for the financier Paul Poisson de Bourvallais. Seized by the Crown in 1716, it passed in 1718 to the princesse de Conti, then to the duc de La Vallière. Louis César de La Baume Le Blanc housed Voltaire and Diderot there and added a rococo chinois salon around 1750.
Around 1750 the duke added a rococo salon chinois whose wall paintings are by Christophe Huet, who also decorated a small cabinet with blue camaïeu figures. Louis César de La Baume Le Blanc, a famous bibliophile, received Diderot, Voltaire, d'Alembert and Moncrif here. The château has served as a film location since 1974.
The 85-hectare estate combines a French parterre laid out around 1710 by Claude Desgots with a 19th-century English-style landscape park; the central axis runs from the garden down to the Marne. Cyclone Lothar damaged mature woodland on 26 December 1999. The château reopened to the public in 2013 after major restoration, and the southwest outbuildings house the historic monuments research laboratory.
The château's Chinese salon, added around 1750, has wall paintings by Christophe Huet. Louis César de La Baume Le Blanc, duc de La Vallière, also installed boiseries from the Hôtel de Mayenne in Paris during the 1895 restoration by Count Louis Cahen d'Anvers. The southwest outbuildings now house the Laboratory for Historic Monument Research.
