Alpe d'Huez, Ski resort and free flight site in Huez, France.
Alpe d'Huez sits in the French Alps between 3690 and 10925 feet (1125 and 3330 meters) and offers more than 155 miles (250 kilometers) of groomed runs with 69 lifts across the Grand Domaine ski area. The site spreads over several mountain faces and glaciers with wide open descents and narrow forest passages for different skill levels.
The first ski lifts were installed here in the 1930s and transformed mountain pastures into a winter sports center. After World War II the area grew rapidly and gained international fame through repeated Tour de France stages.
The name refers to the high pasture above Huez and reflects centuries of alpine farming tradition. Today traditional mountain architecture mixes with modern buildings in a village filled with winter sports enthusiasts from across Europe.
Operations typically run from December through April with daily hours between 8:30 and 17:00 depending on snow conditions and weather. Access follows winding mountain roads that sometimes require chains during fresh snowfall.
The Sarenne run stretches over 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Pic Blanc and is recognized as the longest groomed ski slope in the world. Halfway down skiers pass a small hut where people traditionally pause before the steep lower half begins.
