Viry-Châtillon is a commune in the southern Paris metropolitan area featuring residential neighborhoods interspersed with green spaces across its territory. The town sits at approximately 30 meters in elevation and forms part of the Essonne department.
The place grew from two separate settlements called Viry and Châtillon that gradually merged into a suburban town. It was transferred from Seine-et-Oise to the Essonne department in 1968.
