Biscarrosse, Coastal administrative commune in Landes, France
Biscarrosse is a coastal commune in the Landes department along the French Atlantic shoreline, positioned between ocean beaches and two large freshwater lakes. The territory covers roughly 192 square kilometers (74 square miles) and features extensive pine forests, dunes, and lakeside areas.
In the early 20th century, facilities for seaplanes were built here, turning the area into a major testing ground for French aviation. These installations served as a launch point for transatlantic flights between the 1930s and 1940s.
The municipality maintains a seaplane museum displaying original aircraft and documenting the technical developments of French aviation from 1930 to 1945.
The commune divides into three areas: Biscarrosse-Plage by the ocean with beaches and dunes, Biscarrosse-Ville in the center with shops and services, and Biscarrosse-Lac along the lakes with water activities. The three parts are linked by roads, with several kilometers separating each sector.
The seaplane museum preserves original aircraft from the interwar period and shows the development of this aviation technology in France. Several restored machines that once took off from the nearby lakes are displayed in the exhibition halls.
