Saint-Martin-du-Canigou, Romanesque abbey in Casteil, France.

Saint-Martin-du-Canigou Abbey is a Romanesque monastery set on a mountain slope at about 1088 meters elevation (3,570 feet). The structure features two churches built one above the other and a bell tower with Lombard architectural elements.

Count Wifred II of Cerdanya founded the monastery in 997 as a religious center for the region. After remaining active for approximately 800 years, it was abandoned in 1783 and later fell into decline.

The marble capitals inside display intricate stone carvings that reflect medieval craftsmanship and religious beliefs of the time. Walking through the spaces, visitors notice how carefully the details capture the spiritual life and daily practices of those who worshipped here.

Access to the site requires advance booking for a guided tour, as independent visiting is not permitted. The path to reach the monastery involves climbing a mountain slope, so wear sturdy shoes and expect some physical effort.

The two church levels are connected by a monumental staircase carved directly into the mountainside rock. This solution shows how builders worked within the natural terrain to construct the complex.
