Count Rudolf von Altenburg established the abbey in 1030, and Pope Leo IX, who originated from Alsace, consecrated the church in 1049.
The church structure draws inspiration from the Palatine Chapel of Aix-la-Chapelle and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
