Bugarach, Rural commune in Aude, France

Bugarach is a rural village in Aude that sits beneath a striking mountain formation with distinctive geological layers. The peak and surrounding landscape show older rocks positioned above younger stone layers, creating the unusual shape locals call home.

The settlement first appears in written records in 889 AD under the name Villa Burgaragio, with its name coming from Bugari and linked to Bulgarian Bogomils who settled in medieval France. These early inhabitants shaped the region's character.

The community here maintains its rural character through regular local festivals and markets where artisans display their crafts. Visitors can experience the everyday traditions and rhythms of a small French village through these gatherings.

The village sits on gently rolling ground and is easy to walk through, with views unfolding naturally as you move around. Visit during warmer months when local activities and gatherings happen most often.

In 2012, the village suddenly gained worldwide attention when internet-fueled prophecies named it as the only place that would survive a predicted apocalyptic event. This unexpected fame brought curious visitors to what was previously an overlooked corner of France.
