Altenberg de Bergheim

Altenberg de Bergheim is a Grand Cru vineyard in Alsace that spreads across south-facing slopes north of Colmar. The terrain rises from 220 to 320 meters and features soil made up of Jurassic marl-limestone combined with red calcareous clay and gypsum deposits.

This vineyard gained recognition for quality wines as far back as the 13th century and received its official Grand Cru status in 1983. The classification confirmed a long tradition of excellence in this part of Alsace.

The name refers to its medieval past, and the vineyard is worked by families who have maintained their presence here for generations. You can observe how growers tend the vines carefully and adapt their practices to the specific conditions of the sloping terrain.

The slope is quite steep, so visitors should wear good shoes and bring plenty of water, especially on warm days. The best time to explore is during the growing season when the vines are actively developing and the landscape is at its most vibrant.

This is the only Grand Cru vineyard in Alsace permitted to grow Pinot Noir grapes, making it stand out among all other Grand Cru designations in the region. This exception gives growers here opportunities not available elsewhere.
