Château de Gannat, Medieval castle in Gannat, France

The castle follows a square layout with four towers connected by high walls, featuring defensive elements such as machicolations and crenellations.

Built as a fortress in the 14th century outside the town walls, the structure became uninhabitable by the 16th century and served as a prison until the 1900s.

The Musée Yves Machelon, housed within the castle, displays historical artifacts including a 10th-century Gospel book and a 17th-century ivory crucifix.

The castle museum remains open throughout the year, offering guided tours for groups upon reservation and self-guided visits for individual travelers.

The museum contains seven preserved horse-drawn carriages and maintains a collection of parchments dating from the 14th to 18th centuries.
