Château de Ramstein consists of remaining walls from a residential tower with multiple levels, including chimneys and a large archway entrance. The structure sits on a hillside near Scherwiller in the Alsace region.
The castle was founded in 1293 by Otto von Ochsenstein as a strategic position to support the siege of the nearby Ortenburg fortress. This establishment reflected the military conflicts of that era in the region.
The ruins display characteristics of medieval Alsatian military construction, showing how fortified structures were built during this period with defensive features in mind. Visitors can observe the building techniques through the remaining walls and openings.
Access to the interior of the castle ruins is typically restricted for safety, but the exterior can be viewed from the surrounding area. Good footwear is recommended since the terrain is hilly and uneven.
The castle contains one of the largest archway niches in Alsace, specifically designed to accommodate a large crossbow for defending against neighboring fortifications. This opening is unusually spacious compared to other medieval fortifications.
