The institution operated from 1971 to 2017 as Paris IV, emerging from the division of the University of Paris following the student protests of May 1968.
The university maintained 400 international agreements and housed CELSA, a distinguished communication and journalism school located in Neuilly-sur-Seine.

In 2018, Paris-Sorbonne University merged with Pierre and Marie Curie University to form Sorbonne University, becoming its Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
