Chamalières

Chamalières is a commune in Puy-de-Dôme located west of Clermont-Ferrand and spreads across roughly 14 square kilometers of hilly terrain. The town is defined by its thermal mineral springs, which have been known since ancient times.

Archaeological digs at Source des Roches uncovered thousands of wooden offerings and inscribed lead tablets from Gallo-Roman times. These finds show the site was already regarded as a sacred bathing place in antiquity.

The springs here have drawn people for nearly two thousand years and shaped how the community developed. You can still sense this water-centered heritage in the architecture and in how locals relate to the thermal sites.

A banknote printing facility here has produced Euro and CFA franc currency since 1923. This operation makes the commune an overlooked center of French monetary production.
