Chauvigny, Medieval commune in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Chauvigny sits on a rocky hilltop rising above the Vienne River, with five castles standing on the same elevated location. The town also features important churches and several other medieval structures.
Chauvigny was established during the medieval period and maintained its core structure for centuries. Growth began around 1830 when the lower town expanded along the Talbat stream with new roads.
Local artisans continue working in pottery and basket-making studios found throughout the town. You can watch craftspeople at their workshops and purchase handmade items directly from them.
The town sits about 32 kilometers east of Poitiers and is easy to reach by car or bus. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the upper town is built on a hill with steep streets and stone paths.
A special experience is the Velorail activity where visitors pedal on converted bike-carts along a former railway line. This ride takes you through quiet countryside surrounding the town.
