LGV Sud Europe Atlantique, High-speed railway line in southwestern France
The LGV Sud Europe Atlantique is a high-speed railway connecting Paris to Bordeaux, running across six French departments from Tours southward. The dedicated tracks are built to handle speeds up to 320 kilometers per hour, covering approximately 340 kilometers with modern TGV trains.
The line began operations in 2017, continuing the expansion of France's high-speed rail network into new regions. It extended the existing LGV Atlantique infrastructure further south, connecting Paris more directly to southwestern France.
The line links communities across different parts of France, making it easier for people to travel and connect with regions they might not otherwise visit regularly. It has changed how residents and visitors move between Paris and the southwest, bringing regions closer together.
Travelers can board at several stations including Tours, Poitiers, and Limoges before reaching Bordeaux in the south. The modern trains offer comfortable seating and run at regular intervals throughout the day to accommodate different travel schedules.
The infrastructure is uniquely managed by a private consortium called LISEA until 2061, which operates under a toll-based system for train operators. This private management approach is unusual within France's rail network and reflects how the project was funded and developed.
