Montoire-sur-le-Loir, commune in Loir-et-Cher, France

Montoire-sur-le-Loir is a small French commune in the heart of the Loire Valley region, with buildings dating back over 900 years. The place has old churches like Saint Laurent church with large stained-glass windows, an 11th-century Augustinian convent, and Saint-Gilles chapel decorated with early 12th-century wall paintings.

The place was an important location in the region during the Middle Ages and kept its significance over the centuries. In 1940, major meetings between French and German leaders took place here, an event documented in a museum housed in the old railway station.

The town is closely linked to Renaissance poet Pierre de Ronsard, whose literary heritage shapes the place. Visitors can walk past sites like Saint-Gilles chapel, where the poet prayed, and experience the artistic history of the region through its buildings and monuments.

A walk around the place takes about an hour, and visitors can start with a leaflet from the tourist office or use a mobile app available in many languages. A tourist train runs through the Loir Valley and offers a gentle ride to see the countryside and nearby villages from a different perspective.

A museum called Musikenfête housed in a 500-year-old building displays musical instruments from different countries around the world, including China, India, and Brazil. The museum regularly hosts music festivals with traditional dance and music, bringing international culture to the place.
