Les Deux Alpes, Ski resort and free flight site in Oisans, France
Les Deux Alpes is a winter sports area in the French Alps spanning from 1650 to 3600 meters in elevation, covering 410 hectares of prepared slopes. The terrain rises from forested lower sections up to a glaciated plateau where snow remains even during summer months.
The first lift infrastructure was built in the early 1950s, opening the valley to skiers from outside the region. Over the following decades, the area expanded through the construction of additional lifts and access routes to the higher glacier sections.
The resort combines older village sections with newer buildings designed primarily for visitors, creating a setting where the rhythm of life shifts with the seasons. Many guests return year after year, forming a community that gathers at the base stations and in the village center between runs.
The network of 96 marked trails offers options for beginners, intermediates, and experienced skiers, with runs sorted by difficulty level. In the upper sections, the sun can be strong, so sunscreen and sunglasses are recommended even on cloudy days.
The funicular travels through a tunnel carved into the glacier ice up to 3450 meters, allowing passengers to see the ice layers passing overhead during the ride. This access opens up Europe's largest skiable glacier terrain, where runs remain usable well into the summer months.
