Chartreuse du Liget

Chartreuse du Liget is a Carthusian monastery in the Loire region that spans two communes. The complex features several buildings with a striking gateway decorated with carved stone details.

The monastery was founded in 1178 and became an important religious center in medieval times. It suffered damage during regional conflicts but was restored and adapted over the centuries.

The name comes from the Carthusian order that lived here following strict rules of silence and solitude. Visitors can still see the cells built for isolated monastic life.

The grounds are walkable on foot, with some areas at different levels reflecting the terrain. Wearing proper footwear is advisable, especially when conditions are changeable.

The site is divided into two separate areas: an upper section for spiritual life and a lower section that handled practical matters. This division reveals how the monks organized their daily activities.
