Château de Lichtenberg, 13th century castle in Lichtenberg, France

Château de Lichtenberg is a 13th-century fortress sitting on a hilltop in the northern Vosges at about 400 meters elevation, offering views across the surrounding landscape. The structure contains multiple levels connected by stone staircases, residential chambers, and a chapel tucked within its thick stone walls.

The Lichtenberg family built the fortress in 1206 as a strategic stronghold in the region. In the late 17th century, military engineer Vauban directed improvements to strengthen it against modern warfare.

The chapel inside features Gothic design from the 16th century, while the marble mausoleum decorated in Renaissance style tells us about the families who wanted to show their importance. These spaces reveal how people here expressed their status through art and architecture.

Wear sturdy shoes because the paths are steep and the interior staircases are narrow. Visit between spring and autumn when conditions are pleasant and cultural events are most active.

From the monumental stairway leading up through the levels, visitors can spot the spire of Strasbourg Cathedral visible in the distance on clear days. This surprising view connects the hilltop fortress to the city far below in the plain.
