Château de Lichtenberg is a 13th-century fortress sitting on a hilltop in the northern Vosges at about 400 meters elevation, offering views across the surrounding landscape. The Lichtenberg family built the fortress in 1206 as a strategic stronghold in the region. In the late 17th century, military engineer Vauban directed improvements to strengthen it against modern warfare.
The chapel inside features Gothic design from the 16th century, while the marble mausoleum decorated in Renaissance style tells us about the families who wanted to show their importance. These spaces reveal how people here expressed their status through art and architecture.
